Grana Padano Cheese by Antica Formaggeria
Grana Padano is one of Italy’s oldest and most famous cheeses, and was first produced about 900 years ago by the Cistercian monks in the region of Emilia-Romagna.
It is a hard, slow-ripened cheese made of non-pasteurised cow’s milk, and is comparable to Parmigiano Reggiano or ‘Parmesan’ cheese. The cheese is left to age for at least 12 months before going to the market.
The name comes from the Italian word ‘Grana’ (grain), which makes reference to the characteristic grainy or crumbly texture of the cheese, and the Italian adjective ‘Padano’, which refers to the Po Valley or ‘Pianura Padana’ in the North of Italy, where this particular cheese is produced.
Grana Padano has had Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) status since 1996.
This cheese is great on its own, with a glass of good red wine, or as an accompaniment to your favourite pasta dish or Risotto.
